Professional background

Admitted to the Bars of Costa Rica and New York, Ms. Mónica Fernández-Fonseca specializes in international dispute settlement, in particular international commercial and investment arbitration and is regularly involved in cases under the ICSID Convention, ICSID’s Additional Facility, the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules and the ICC Arbitration Rules, as well as ad hoc arbitrations.

Ms. Fernández-Fonseca has a wealth of experience working both in the public and private sector. Between 2008 and 2011, as a member of the Ministry of Commerce of Costa Rica, she was part of the legal defence team of the Republic of Costa Rica in several investment arbitrations. Before joining the firm, Ms. Fernández-Fonseca also worked in the international arbitration departments of leading US and UK law firms in Washington, D.C. and Paris, in one of the leading international arbitration boutiques in Geneva and in chambers of Judge Dalveer Bhandari at the International Court of Justice.

Ms. Fernández-Fonseca is a Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration where she represents Costa Rica.
